As a teacher it is very difficult to encourage a student to read on his/her own time. What I would do is maybe show them different ways to have fun while reading. I found a very useful website that students could use at home and practice reading. One of the games I found is called Blast the Rocket. This games is very fun but also helps mainly kindergarten through first graders read different words. There are many fun reading activities but its up to you to explore the internet to find them.
As a parent you are usually busy and caught up in everyday stress. But one way you can make sure your son/daughter reads the appropriate 20 minuets each day is to make it a routine every night to have story time and have your child read you a story. Not only is he/she getting the 20 minuet reading experience but he/she is also spending time with you by having story night each night. Make it more of a thing that your child looks forward too rather than them thinking its homework.
I personally don't like to read at all but I do try my best to read everyday day. When interning at elementary school it is very obvious which student does there 20 minuet reading each night. there is a major difference between the students who read versus the ones who don't. There are also those in between students who read but maybe not every night. If every student were to do their twenty minute reading each day it would be very helpful for teachers.
